Korea Trip Day 1 – Super hard to communicate!

In the early last year, I gave my mum a few choices of travel destinations, and she chose Korea. So I bought the flight ticket to South Korea about a year ago, and I have been planning a 9 Days 8 Nights trip (6N in Seoul and 2N in Busan) for some time. It is going to be a luxury trip for us!

We have finally arrived in Seoul today. This is our first time visiting Korea so I am quite excited. 🙂

When we landed at the airport, the first thing that I wanted to do is to get a sim card for my phone. I rented a sim card from the booth in the airport for 33,000 won (about USD$29). It has unlimited data usage and can be used for 10 days. I think this is the best thing that I have bought in Korea! Although many places in Korea have free wifi, it is more convenient to have a sim card so that I can use GPS and translator anytime and anywhere (as it is really hard to communicate with the people here). Also, I need a phone number to standby for my work.

Simcard Rental Korea

I want to do the same thing for my mother (so she can call me if she is lost), but her phone has different sim card slot and I am unable to rent the sim card for her. If you are coming to Korea and would like to rent a sim card, I recommend that you should check your sim card size beforehand!

I went to the bookstore to buy the sim card for my mum (by the way, they have cheaper sim card package but has limited data usage). The thing is, I can barely communicate with the staff because their English is very poor. I used a lot of body language. The staff inserted the sim card into the wrong slot on my mother’s phone and unable to take it out. I was NOT able to communicate with them. They were a bit rude and I felt helpless. So I paid 25,000 won for the sim card which is totally useless.

In hindsight, I should have just rented the wifi (instead of sim card) for her because she only needs to Whatsapp if she is lost.

After that, we requested a Taxi to pick us from the airport to our hotel.

We waited for about 20 minutes. Once the taxi driver came, he immediately took our stuff and walked very fast (almost running) to his car. We were not able to catch up with him. He didn’t look back at us. We had almost walked till the end of the airport and couldn’t find him.

I went back to the taxi booth and wait for the taxi guy. When I saw him again I was very angry and then we quarrelled. I really seldom quarrel with people but I was really frustrated. My mother was tired and he made her walk so far away.

The taxi guy also quarrels with the traffic police officers because he did not park his car properly. It was very loud and scary. I felt that we were threatened but it was too late to run away. Luckily he said sorry to us in the car so I felt relieved.

It is not easy on our first day!
