Oamaru – Feel the art and happiness

Oamaru, New Zealand

Oamaru, South Island, New Zealand

Oamaru is a very small and quiet place in South Island, New Zealand. it is popular for people who are on Working Holiday scheme looking for some seasonal job, as there are carrot farms here creating job opportunities. So you may see some backpackers stay here for months.

I stayed in a backpacker’s hostel for a night. At night I followed a few backpackers to visit little blue penguins. The penguins are cute but I could not see them clearly because it was very dark at night, and we are not allowed to open flash light as it will frighten them.

The next day morning is a sunny day!! I went to a playground with my friend. It is a lovely and beautiful playground. For me, I would be happy enough even if I just sit down and watch the kids playing innocently with their family. Well, playground is a place that makes people happy isn’t it? 🙂

Honestly, I would love to play as well, but there are many kids who are queuing for it, and I do not want to queue with them, else they will observe me as a weird old sister 😛

I like the streets in Oamaru very much – it has a very ‘artist feel’ here. I am not good at art at all, yet I have a very good time here. There are many shops in the street. The shops all look similar, but each of them is actually unique if you look out for them. The items sold are creative and refined. My friend told me that most artists are poor. But I think the artist are cool and brave because they persist on what they really like in life, and never give up easily. I believe they are happy as they chose their way of life. I appreciate this kind of effort and courage.

I am regret that I did not take photos inside the shops. Here are some photos taken in the street by my friend:

We also went to a small museum, the entrance fee is NZD$9. It is quite a small museum but we took hundreds of photo out there!

There are not many tourist attractions in Oamaru. If you are traveling with limited time, it is recommended that you stay here for one/two nights which will be enough. If you are looking for a seasonal job and would like to experience quiet and peaceful lifestyle, Oamaru is a very good choice. Personally I love Oamaru very much and I had a really great time here.
