Somes Island

Matiu/Somes Island is accessible by ferry in Wellington. It is a small island with well paved track maintained by Department of Conversation (DOC). From 31 January 2015 onwards, Somes Island will be closing at 1.00pm each day until further notice. If you are going in the weekend, I recommend taking the first ferry (10am) in Queens Wharf and return at 12.50pm (different timetable for other wharf). Two hours are enough to explore the island!

Actually I wanted to go to Somes Island since last week. On last Saturday I wanted to go there from Queens Wharf but I went to a wrong wharf – Petone wharf which is undergoing repairs from storm damage. For some reasons I thought that Petone Wharf = Queen Wharf. I am blur as usual, haha =.= Luckily I am in the right wharf this time!

This is a very short track, and you can complete it in one to two hours. I recommend walking slowly and taking time to enjoy the scenery. Also, bring some foods and picnic here.

I like standing high on a place and looking far away, and then I will be thinking: “Where will I be at this moment if I didn’t begin my opposite journey?”

I am impressed by the efforts taken by DOC to keep up Somes Island. I think Somes Island is a good place to go if you want something different from city.
