Tongariro National Park, North Island, New Zealand

I had a more enjoyable time during summer. Read my winter experience here.

Summer is a popular season for tramping in Tongariro National Park, as it is generally easier and safer. I completed the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (19.4km) with my friend in 7 hours. I know the result is not very good, yet I am proud of it because I have completed the whole track! 😀

We stayed three nights at Ohakune. We took the shuttle bus to Tongariro National Park at 7am and began our tramping. The sky was still dark, and it was quite cold (must bring warm clothing regardless of which season you’re here!). We know the day will be tough for us, so we kept thinking why did we ask for trouble? >.<

After some walking…

The scenery along the walk is wonderful. The sky is very blue. The cloud is very beautiful. I have had a very good time here despite I was very tired along the walk.

Time to go down… It is very steep:

I am suffering from acrophobia as I extremely fear of height. At the time I walk down the mountain, I was very scared and my leg couldn’t stop trembling. My friend was trying to take an ‘ugly post’ of me, but each time when she point camera at me I will be back to normal! 😛 In the end, we took 30 minutes to walk down the mountain whereas other people took only 5-10 minutes!

Finally we saw the Emerald Lake after a frightening walk. The colour of the lake is outstanding.

Relaxing after the walk:

For me, the winter view is much more stunning, but actually I have a better time in summer. Tramping in winter is an adventurous experience for me, while I enjoy seeing the scenery at my own pace or capability in summer.

If you are interested in doing the tramping in Tongariro National Park, it would be good if you can experience in both summer and winter time, as their views are totally different. Both of them will bring you excellent experience! If you have limited time, I strongly suggest tramping in winter if you are fit enough and having the right skills and equipment. Else, I would suggest tramping in summer which is a popular season for tourists.
