My Small Stories in New Zealand

First week of my new job

This is the first week I have ‘officially’ started my new job. Although I am still working for the same company, but I have a feeling that I am a new employee because my work location has changed, my colleagues has changed, and my job scope has completely changed as well!

The commuting time to my new office is about 40 minutes (one way including traffic jam), so the traffic is not as bad as I was expecting. About the environment, the air circulation is much better than my previous office. Also, I was allocated to a window seat and I am pretty satisfied. But, the downside of working in the new place is that I do not have friends.

Most of my new colleagues are male. I can conclude that about 80-90% of the colleagues surrounding me are men! This is very different as compared to my previous work location where there are more female than male. I think this is because of the nature of the work, most client-facing employees are male and most back office employees are female.

There is a cafeteria inside the building. It reminds me of the ‘school canteen’. Many people are having their breakfast and lunch here because it is a bit far to eat in outside. Also, the food is cheaper than outside food by about 30%, though the choice of foods is very limited.

An incident

Yesterday I worked till very late. I had a dinner in the restaurant nearby my house. When I was leaving my parking, I forgot to switch on my car’s headlight (as I was busy thinking about how to merge two tables into one pivot table in excel file). It was only less than 10 seconds, and I immediately switch on the headlight once I realised it. But… A police car is just in front me and coming to my way (he is turning into a junction)! Oh my god! The blue light on the police car is on, so it means I was caught!

But, I was driving in a straight direction and some cars are following me, where should I stop my car? The police car has already turned into the junction, I don’t know if I should make a U-turn and go to that junction as well. I kept looking at my back mirror but I couldn’t see the police car. My house is just very close to me, also I was desperately to go back home after a tiring working day. So I just drive back home directly.

I don’t know what will happen. Maybe I will receive a letter and I will be fined. But I am afraid that this is considered an offense because I did not stop my car and wait for the police. Till now I am still scared.

Hope everything will be fine!
