There are many blueberry farms in Wellington in New Zealand. Some of them allow you to pick your own (PYO) blueberry, which is a very fun thing to do in Wellington. The popular place to PYO blueberry is Akatarawa; it is an area between Upper Hutt and Kapiti Coast. The PYO blueberry usually starts from January until April of the year, and the availability is very dependent on the weather. So, pray for the good weather before you go!
We visited Bluebank Blueberry & Emu Farm on this sunny day. The farm is about 45 minutes drive from Wellington city so it is not too far away. We had a big lunch on the way at KFC Upper Hutt. KFC is one of my favourites and I have KFC twice on these two days! Life is great for me! 🙂
Once we arrived at the farm and walked out of the car, a bird pooped on Ben’s arm. He said that it was unlucky, but I told him that the bird poop brings good luck! The pain was that we were unable to find water in the farm to wash it off, though there were mobile toilet and sanitizer.
You can bring some bread to hand feed the emus. Ben scared the emus away and one of the emus immediately pooped. >.<”
Ben was picking blueberries seriously. He spent most of his time in the farm to pick the blueberries, while I spent most of my time to take his photos taking blueberries…
He has a big advantage. He is tall so he can pick the blueberries that other people could barely touch.
Was I picking blueberry? Hmm… Actually I just asked Ben to take a photo of my back so it looks like I was picking blueberries as well.
There are a lot of baby blueberries. They will become delicious blueberries once they grow up. 🙂
The weather was extremely hot! Here is a photo of me with the blueberries:
Both of us have picked one small box of blueberries. In fact, 90% of the blueberries were picked by Ben. At Bluebank Blueberry and Emu Farm, A small box of blueberries cost NZD$22 and a big box cost NZD$40. It is more worthwhile to get a big box (because it is really big) instead of a small box.
As usual, we took a selfie after picking blueberry 🙂
If you are interested to pick your own blueberry at Bluebank Blueberry and Emu Farm, you should check the PYO blueberry availability on their website before you go. They update the status almost every day. Besides, I recommend coming in the morning because the nice blueberries are always picked out first.
Location of the farm: 1301 Akatarawa Valley
We will enjoy the blueberry! 🙂
