Hamburg is the second largest city as well as one of the richest cities in Germany. We spent 3 days in Hamburg as a short getaway trip from Gottingen. At first, I thought Hamburg would just be another big boring city… but I was wrong. Its Miniatur Wunderland was impressive and we were also moved by the destroyed church.
We took slightly more than 2 hours to travel from Gottingen by train (one-way). We regretted that we did not book the train ticket earlier because it became very expensive in the last minute.
Indulge in the smallest and perfect world @ Miniatur Wunderland
One of the most popular attractions in Hamburg is Miniature Wunderland, a world of models. It is really impressive – not just for kids – adults will get lost here too.
It is impossible to see everything here because there are tremendous amount of details. The good thing about this place is that it is quite educational because their works show the famous places and events all over the world.
One thing that surprised us is that there were a lot of porn / naked people in their works… which might not be so kid-friendly?
There is a food court here so you can easily spend a whole day here. However, we only stayed here for 2-3 hours because it was getting crowded and stuffy for us. We were here in a low season so we could not imagine how many people would be here during peak season.
Tips: remember to book the Miniatur Wunderland entrance ticket online because it is very popular. Otherwise, you can queue for a few hours to get in.
What is around the city of Hamburg ❤️
Hamburg is one of the wealthiest places in Germany and has 40,000 millionaires! (source: Hamburg)
According to our free walking tour guide, Hamburg used to be tax-free and was popular for commercial activities and hence became one of the wealthiest cities in Germany. The Speicherstadt (Historic Warehouse District) was built as a free zone to transfer goods without paying taxes.
It is relaxing to walk around the city centre. We had a nice burger meal at Jim Block and some currywurst on the street. We just enjoyed the vibe in Hamburg, which looks like a clean and classy city.
The destroyed church
The church was heavily damaged during World War II. It was heart-breaking to see the church with our own eyes as the destroyed church has remained untouched – they did not repair it intentionally in order to remind people about the horrors of war.
Hamburg is a great place to live…
Hamburg may not be a popular travel destination as compared to other cities in Germany such as Berlin and Munich. It is also an expensive place to travel to. But, it has a diverse environment and great lifestyle and is a dream-come-true for many people (source: Nina Travels). It also adds something different to our trip in Germany.
