Car headlight on
My Small Stories in New Zealand

My car battery died

Today is a rainy day. I was lying in bed until 11.30am (it’s a Saturday!) and still feel lazy. Then I drive myself to the supermarket (Countdown), as I need to stock up my foods.

When I walked back to my car from the Countdown, I realized that I forgot to turn off my car headlights!! Oh my god!!

Then of course, the light has drained my car battery… I kept on starting my car engine and step on the accelerator to the maximum, but it doesn’t work because the car battery is already dead T__T What should I do now?

The first thought came into my mind is to ask the help from AA. AA is Automobile Association in New Zealand offering car services such as towing, insurance and so on. I am a member of AA, so I am entitled for free car towing services to the nearest place of repair (up to 6 times per year).

But then, I realized that I do not have a phone to reach AA – my phone was sent to repair a couple of days ago. Haih… Why am I so careless?

It seems that my only choice is to ask the help from the staff in Countdown. So I give it a try. Surprisingly the staffs are already aware of this when I told them; one of the staffs even had my car plate number on his hand and asked if I am the owner of the car (he wrote it down because he knew I will ask for help). Then the staff drive a car (I think it is his personal car) to my car and jump-start my car. They are extremely kind and helpful.

Finally, my car battery is revived 😀

I feel lucky and grateful. If similar thing happen in my home country, I can easily contact my family for help. But now I am living in New Zealand by myself, I cannot rely on my family anymore. I appreciate every help offered by others, because I know the help is not granted. I found that most of the people in New Zealand are very friendly, as they always offer help voluntarily if they think I am in trouble. I am glad that I am living here.
