My Small Stories in New Zealand

Two parking fines in two days

Oh my god… I got two fines in these two days!

parking fine

First fine (NZD$40) – Parked on Motocycle Parking. I didn’t know it is a motocycle parking. I just parked for less than 5 minutes, as I wanted to take out money from the nearby ATM for my mother. My mother was staying in the car with the car key. I saw a guy calling on phone (calling to police officer/NZTA?) and the fine was posted to my house. The amount of the fine is not much, but I was unhappy because I think it is cruel.

Second fine (NZD$200!) – My car is unable to pass the Warrant of Fitness (WOF) so I want to scrap it. I parked my car on the street outside of my house, as I thought it is fine as long as I am not driving the car. But I still get a fine of NZD$200 because the WOF has expired, and the Offence title is “Operated an unlicensed motor vehicle Parked vehicle”!

Nevertheless, I think I am considered lucky. There is another car owner nearby my house who was also scraping his car gets a fine of NZD$600 because he didn’t display WOF (cost NZD$200) and REGO (cost NZD$400). I have removed my REGO last week although it has not yet expired (because I was worried that I will forget to take it out when I sell my car), so I am actually in risk of getting fine of NZD$400 anytime! Now I have sold my car for NZD$250 which is just enough to cover the fines. >.<

I learnt an important lesson. Even if you do not use your car, you still need to renew and display WOF and REGO on your car! Or hide it inside your garage!
